Why EVs are cheaper to own

The purchase price of an EV is higher than its ICE equivalent, but the total cost of ownership (TCO) over 5 years is typically 20-40% lower. This is because:

  • Fuel cost: ₹1-2/km (electricity) vs ₹5-8/km (petrol)
  • Maintenance: ₹3,000-8,000/year vs ₹8,000-20,000/year
  • No road tax: Most states exempt EVs from road tax (saving ₹50,000-3,00,000 depending on vehicle)
  • Lower insurance: EVs qualify for green vehicle discounts at some insurers
  • Use our TCO calculator

Every EV model page on ev.care has an interactive TCO calculator. Set your annual km, electricity rate, and ownership period to see exact savings vs a petrol equivalent.

Government subsidies that reduce upfront cost

  • FAME-II / PM E-DRIVE: Central government subsidy of up to ₹10,000/kWh for 2W/3W
  • State subsidies: Delhi (₹30,000 for 2W), Maharashtra (₹25,000), Gujarat (₹20,000) — check our subsidy calculator on each model page
  • Road tax exemption: Most states exempt EVs partially or fully
  • Registration fee waiver: Several states waive registration fees for EVs
