The two cars and their factory tyres
Before anything else, know exactly what your car left the factory wearing. Fitting the wrong size or rating is the single most common way owners quietly ruin their range, ride and warranty.
Hyundai Creta Electric
The Creta Electric rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/60 R17 tyres as the original equipment fitment across variants in India. Decoded, that is 215 mm tread width, a 60 percent aspect ratio (sidewall height is 60 percent of the width, so a fairly tall, comfort-friendly sidewall), radial construction, on a 17-inch rim. The tall-ish sidewall is good news on Indian roads because it cushions potholes and protects the rim.
Because the Creta Electric shares its body with the petrol and diesel Creta, owners sometimes assume any Creta tyre will fit. The size may match a petrol Creta variant, but the EV is noticeably heavier and the factory tyres are chosen with that extra mass and rolling resistance in mind. Match the size, and respect the load and speed rating printed on the original tyre.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 sold in India runs 20-inch turbine-design alloy wheels with 255/45 R20 tyres front and rear. That is a wide 255 mm tread, a low 45 percent sidewall and a large 20-inch rim, a far more performance-oriented setup than the Creta EV. Many Ioniq 5 units leave the factory on Michelin Pilot Sport EV rubber, a genuinely EV-specific tyre engineered for low rolling resistance, reduced noise and the high loads of an electric crossover.
The trade-off of that big wheel and short sidewall is that the Ioniq 5 is less forgiving over sharp edges, more sensitive to potholes and more expensive to re-shoe. The reward is sharper steering, excellent high-speed stability and strong grip. Knowing which side of that trade-off you sit on shapes every tyre decision that follows.
Common tyre and wheel problems on EVs
Across both cars, and across electric vehicles generally, the same cluster of complaints comes up again and again at the workshop. If you recognise two or more of these, your tyres and wheels are trying to tell you something.
- Fast tread wear. The tyres simply do not last as long as you are used to. A set you expected to see 60,000 km from is worn at 35,000-45,000 km. This is the number one EV tyre surprise.
- Uneven or one-sided wear. The inner or outer shoulder wears faster than the middle, or one tyre is visibly more worn than its partner. This points at alignment, pressure or a suspension issue rather than the tyre itself.
- Cupping or feathering. Run your palm across the tread and it feels like scallops or saw-teeth. You may also hear a droning hum that rises and falls with speed. This is usually an alignment or balancing problem left unaddressed.
- Increased road noise over time. EVs are quiet, so tyre noise that a petrol engine would mask becomes obvious. As tyres wear or wear unevenly, that noise grows and can become tiring on the highway.
- Vibration through the steering or seat. A shimmy at 80-100 km/h almost always means a wheel is out of balance, a weight has fallen off, or a tyre has developed a flat spot or internal damage.
- Punctures and sidewall damage. Indian roads serve up nails, debris and unmarked speed breakers. On a heavy EV with a low-profile tyre (especially the Ioniq 5), a pothole strike is more likely to pinch the sidewall or even crack an alloy.
- Noticeable range loss. If your real-world range has quietly dropped and the battery checks out fine, under-inflated, worn or wrong-spec tyres are a prime suspect. Rolling resistance is a bigger slice of an EV's energy budget than most owners realise.
Why it happens: the EV physics
None of the above is bad luck. It is the direct, predictable result of how an electric vehicle is built and driven. Four forces are at work.
Extra weight from the battery
An EV typically weighs 20-30 percent more than the equivalent petrol or diesel car, and an electric SUV can carry 300-500 kg of extra mass, almost all of it battery sitting low in the floor. Every kilogram presses the tread harder into the road. More load on the contact patch means more friction, more heat and faster wear, plus higher loads through the wheel bearings and suspension. This is exactly why EV tyres carry higher load ratings and why fitting an under-rated tyre is dangerous.
Instant torque
An electric motor delivers maximum torque from zero rpm. Squeeze the accelerator and full twisting force hits the contact patch immediately, with no gradual build-up. That micro-slip every time you pull away from a light scrubs rubber off the tread. The Ioniq 5, with its strong performance, is especially capable of chewing tyres if driven enthusiastically, but even a gently driven Creta Electric wears faster than its petrol twin for this reason.
EV-specific tyres and the range trade-off
Many EVs, including the Ioniq 5, ship with special tyres tuned for low rolling resistance (to protect range), low noise (because the cabin is silent), and high load (because the car is heavy). Manufacturers achieve low rolling resistance with specific silica-rich compounds and tread patterns, and they cut noise with foam liners bonded inside the tyre. These are sophisticated, more expensive tyres. The very compounds that save range can wear a little faster, and the foam and reinforced construction add cost, which is a big part of why EV tyres are pricier to replace.
This is also why fitting the wrong tyres backfires. A cheap, generic tyre with high rolling resistance can quietly steal real-world range, raise cabin noise, and, if it is under-rated for load, compromise safety and handling. You can fit a good non-EV tyre, but you must respect the load and speed rating and accept it may not match the OE tyre on range or quietness.
Regenerative braking and lack of coasting
In a petrol car you lift off and coast, and the tyres get a rest. An EV almost never truly coasts: either the motor is driving the wheels or regenerative braking is decelerating them through the same contact patch. Force is being applied to the tread far more of the time, which adds to wear, particularly on the driven axle.
Indian conditions stack on top
Now layer on India. High ambient heat softens rubber and accelerates wear and ageing. Monsoon means standing water, where tread depth and the right wet-grip tyre decide whether you aquaplane or stop. Rough roads, potholes and aggressive speed breakers batter low-profile tyres and alloys and knock wheels out of alignment. Heavy, slow city traffic with constant stop-start on a heavy EV is about the harshest tyre duty cycle there is. All of this means tyre choice, pressure and maintenance matter even more here than in cooler, smoother markets.
Choosing the right tyres
When it is time to replace, resist the urge to simply pick the cheapest tyre in the correct size. On an EV, the spec on the sidewall and the type of tyre matter as much as the brand.
Get the size exactly right
- Creta Electric: 215/60 R17.
- Ioniq 5: 255/45 R20.
Do not change width, profile or rim size on a whim. Going wider or to a lower profile for looks adds rolling resistance and harshness, can foul the bodywork, throws off the speedometer and ADAS calibration, and can void warranty. If you genuinely want to change wheel size, do it as a deliberate, properly engineered plus-size or minus-size with a workshop that understands EVs, not by guesswork.
Respect load index and speed rating
This is non-negotiable on a heavy EV. The original tyre carries a load index and speed rating chosen for the car's mass and top speed (you will commonly see ratings such as 105 on these vehicles, meaning a high per-tyre load capacity, often marked XL for extra load). Never fit a tyre with a lower load index than the original. An under-rated tyre on a heavy EV runs hotter, wears faster and can fail. Match or exceed the original load index, and match the speed rating.
EV-rated vs normal tyres
EV-specific tyres (the Ioniq 5's Michelin Pilot Sport EV is a good example) are engineered for the four EV realities above: heavy load, low rolling resistance, low noise and high torque. They are the safest like-for-like choice and best protect your range and refinement. A high-quality conventional tyre in the correct size, load and speed rating is also a legitimate option and can save money, as long as you accept it may be slightly thirstier on range or a touch noisier. The mistake to avoid is a cheap budget tyre that is under-rated or has high rolling resistance.
Rolling resistance vs grip vs noise
Tyre design is a balancing act, and you cannot maximise everything at once.
- Low rolling resistance protects range but, taken to an extreme, can trade away some wet grip and tread life.
- Maximum grip and wet performance are what keep you safe in the monsoon but can cost a little range.
- Low noise keeps an already-quiet EV serene but is often a premium feature.
For most Indian owners the sensible priority order is safety and wet grip first, then tread life, then range, then noise. A reputable touring or SUV tyre from a major brand in the correct EV-appropriate spec usually strikes that balance well. If your driving is mostly highway and you want to defend range, lean toward a recognised low-rolling-resistance or EV-marked tyre. Pressure, rotation, alignment and balancing
Buying good tyres is half the job. How you maintain them decides whether you get 35,000 km or 55,000 km out of them, and whether your range and ride stay where they should.
Tyre pressure: the highest-value five minutes
Correct pressure is the cheapest range, safety and tyre-life upgrade available, and on a heavy EV it matters more than on a light hatchback.
- Use the placard, not guesswork. The manufacturer's recommended pressures are printed on a sticker, usually in the driver's door jamb, and in the owner's manual. As a guide, Ioniq 5-class EVs commonly call for around 36-38 psi, rising for full loads, but always follow your specific car's placard rather than a generic number.
- Check cold, every two weeks. Measure when the tyres are cold (driven less than about 2 km), because heat raises pressure and gives a false high reading. EV tyres are heavily loaded, so a slow leak bites faster.
- Add a little for full loads and highway runs. Carrying the family and luggage to the hills justifies the higher placard figure. Under-inflation under heavy EV load builds dangerous heat and destroys the shoulders.
- Do not chase range by over-inflating. Pumping pressure way above spec gives a harsh ride, less grip, a smaller contact patch and faster centre wear. Stay at the recommended figure.
- Consider nitrogen, but plain air is fine. Nitrogen holds pressure marginally more steadily with temperature swings, which suits hot Indian conditions, but disciplined fortnightly checks with normal air matter far more than the gas inside.
Rotation
Rotate your tyres roughly every 8,000-10,000 km to even out wear, since the driven axle and front tyres on an EV wear differently from the rest. The Creta Electric, with the same size all round, rotates easily. On the Ioniq 5, check whether your specific tyres are directional or asymmetric, as that dictates which rotation pattern is allowed. Rotation is cheap insurance that buys real extra tyre life.
Alignment
Indian potholes and speed breakers knock wheels out of alignment, and a heavy EV with instant torque punishes misalignment with fast, uneven wear. Get alignment checked at least once a year, after any hard pothole or kerb strike, whenever you fit new tyres, and the moment you notice the car pulling to one side or the steering sitting off-centre. Correct alignment also protects range, because dragging, misaligned tyres waste energy.
Balancing
Out-of-balance wheels cause that classic highway vibration and create flat-spotting and cupping over time. Always balance when fitting new tyres, and re-balance if a wheel weight falls off or vibration appears. Tyre life and replacement cost in India
Here is the part owners most want a straight answer on. Treat all figures as indicative; actual life and price depend on driving style, roads, load and the specific tyre.
How long will they last
On an EV, plan for roughly 30,000-50,000 km from a set, against the 60,000-80,000 km many petrol drivers are used to. Gentle driving, disciplined pressure, regular rotation and good alignment push you toward the upper end. Hard acceleration, chronic under-inflation, neglected alignment and rough roads drag you to the lower end. The Ioniq 5's performance and low-profile tyres can wear faster if driven enthusiastically, while a sedately driven Creta Electric can do well.
When to replace
- Tread depth at the wear bar. Replace at or before 1.6 mm (the legal minimum). For monsoon safety, seriously consider replacing by about 3 mm, because wet grip falls off sharply as tread shallows.
- Age. Replace tyres around 5-6 years old regardless of tread, since heat and UV harden the rubber. Check the four-digit date code on the sidewall.
- Damage. Any sidewall bulge, cut, crack or repeated puncture in the shoulder means replace, not repair.
- Uneven wear that will not respond. If one area is bald while the rest has life, fix the underlying alignment or suspension cause and replace as needed.
Indicative replacement cost
- Creta Electric (215/60 R17): quality tyres in this size typically run around 9,000-15,000 per tyre, so a full set of four is broadly 40,000-60,000 before fitting, depending on brand and tier.
- Ioniq 5 (255/45 R20): this premium size is markedly dearer. Good tyres run from roughly 20,000 per tyre at the value end to around 28,000 for the OE-style Michelin Pilot Sport EV, and up to 45,000-55,000 for top-tier performance options. A full set can therefore land anywhere from around 80,000 to well over 1,80,000, which is a real budgeting reality of owning a large EV.
