Extra weight from the battery
The battery is the single heaviest component in an EV, and it is always there whether the car is empty or full. That permanent extra load increases the force pressing each tyre into the road. More load means more friction at the contact patch, which means more wear, and it also means the tyre must be built strong enough not to overheat or deform under the strain.
Instant torque
A petrol engine builds power as it revs. An electric motor delivers maximum torque from a standstill. Every time you pull away briskly from a traffic signal, the tyres have to convert that immediate surge into grip. Repeated hard launches scrub off rubber far quicker than the gentler power delivery of a petrol car, which is why an enthusiastically driven EV can eat a set of tyres alarmingly fast.
EV-specific tyre design
To manage weight, torque, range and noise, carmakers fit purpose-built tyres. These differ from ordinary tyres in several ways:
- Low rolling resistance. Special tread compounds and internal construction reduce how much the tyre flexes as it rolls, so less of your battery's energy is wasted as heat. This directly protects driving range.

When it is time to replace, the goal is to match or improve on what the carmaker fitted. Here is how to get it right.
Match the size exactly
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall and in your owner's manual, in a format like 215/60 R16. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the sidewall height as a percentage of width, and the last is the wheel diameter in inches. Stick to the size your car was designed for unless a tyre professional specifically recommends an approved alternative. Common original-equipment sizes on popular Indian EVs are a useful reference point:
- Tata Tiago EV: 175/65 R14
- Tata Punch EV: 195/60 R16 on the higher variants
- Tata Nexon EV: 215/60 R16
- MG ZS EV: 215/55 R17
These are indicative and vary by variant and model year, so always confirm against your own car's placard, usually found on the driver's door frame.
Respect the load index and speed rating
After the size you will see a number and a letter, for example 95H. The number is the load index and the letter is the speed rating. On an EV these are not optional. If your car specifies an Extra Load or High Load tyre, fitting a standard-load tyre to save money is genuinely unsafe, can overheat under the battery weight and may void your tyre warranty. Always match or exceed the load index your manufacturer specifies.
EV-rated versus ordinary tyres

Technically you can fit a good-quality conventional tyre of the correct size and load rating to an EV, and it will be safe if it meets the specification. The practical trade-off is that ordinary tyres usually wear quicker on an EV, often increase road noise in the quiet cabin, and can reduce range because they are not optimised for low rolling resistance. EV-rated or EV-marked tyres are designed for exactly this duty and are the safer default choice. Some makers mark these tyres with an EV badge or a specific seal on the sidewall.
Balancing rolling resistance against grip
There is a genuine engineering trade-off between low rolling resistance, which protects range, and outright grip, which protects you in an emergency stop on a wet road. A tyre optimised purely for efficiency may give up a little wet grip, while a sticky performance tyre will hurt your range. For most Indian EV owners the sensible middle path is a quality touring or EV-rated tyre that balances both, rather than chasing the lowest-resistance or the grippiest extreme. Pressure, rotation, alignment and balancing
Good maintenance is where you claw back most of the cost and wear penalty of EV tyres. None of it is complicated.
Set the correct pressure and check it often
Always inflate to the pressure your carmaker specifies, found on the driver's door placard or in the manual, not to a generic number. Because EVs are heavy and Indian temperatures swing widely, check pressure at least once a fortnight and before any long drive. Set pressure when the tyres are cold, ideally in the morning before driving, since a hot tyre reads artificially high. If your EV has a tyre pressure monitoring system, treat a warning as urgent rather than something to deal with later.
Rotate on schedule
Rotating tyres, moving them between positions to even out wear, is especially valuable on an EV because front and rear tyres often wear at very different rates. A sensible interval for Indian conditions is every 7,500 to 10,000 km. Regular rotation can noticeably extend the life of an expensive EV tyre set and is one of the cheapest ways to save money.
Get the alignment checked
Wheel alignment ensures the wheels point exactly where they should. Have the alignment checked at every rotation, after any significant pothole or kerb impact, and immediately if you notice the steering pulling or the tread wearing on one edge.
Balance the wheels
Wheel balancing corrects tiny weight differences so the wheel spins smoothly. Out-of-balance wheels cause the steering vibration many owners feel at highway speed, and over time they worsen tyre wear and stress suspension parts. Get the wheels balanced whenever you fit new tyres, after a puncture repair, or the moment you feel a vibration appear.
Mind the tread depth, especially before the monsoon
The legal minimum tread depth in India is 1.6 mm, but for safe wet-weather grip many experts recommend replacing tyres once the tread wears down to around 3 mm. Before the monsoon, check your tread. Worn tyres that are technically legal in the dry can still aquaplane dangerously on a flooded road, and a heavy EV carries more momentum into that situation.

As a broad guide, EV tyres often last somewhere in the range of 30,000 to 50,000 km, against roughly 40,000 to 70,000 km for tyres on a comparable petrol car.
