Why EV tyres matter more than you think in India
On a conventional car, tyres are almost an afterthought. You buy whatever the local shop stocks, top up the air every few weeks, and replace them when the tread looks low. On an electric car, that casual approach quietly costs you money and range.
Three things make EVs different. First, they are heavy. A mid-size electric SUV can weigh 200 to 400 kg more than the petrol version of the same body, almost all of it from the battery pack sitting low in the floor. Second, electric motors deliver their full twisting force, or torque, the instant you touch the accelerator, which loads the tyres hard every time you pull away. Third, most EVs leave the factory on special tyres tuned for low rolling resistance and low noise, not for long tread life. Put those together and the contact patch where rubber meets road is working much harder than on an equivalent petrol car.
Now add the Indian operating environment. Surface temperatures on a Delhi or Ahmedabad summer afternoon can be brutal, and heat is the single biggest enemy of rubber. Potholes, broken edges, sudden speed breakers and unmarked craters batter the sidewalls and knock the alignment out. The monsoon turns smooth, worn tyres into a genuine hazard because a tyre with shallow tread cannot clear water fast enough and the car aquaplanes. So in India, tyre care on an EV is not pedantry, it is the difference between 35,000 km and 55,000 km of safe service from one set, and between confident wet braking and a scary moment on a flooded flyover.
Common tyre and wheel problems on EVs
Most issues EV owners bring to us fall into a handful of recognisable patterns. Knowing the symptom helps you act before a small problem becomes a four-tyre bill.
Fast overall wear
The most common complaint is simply that the tyres are finished sooner than expected. Where a petrol hatchback might see 55,000 to 60,000 km from a set, the same family driving an EV in city conditions may be shopping for replacements at 35,000 to 45,000 km. Industry testing repeatedly finds EV tyres wearing roughly 20% to 50% faster than tyres on comparable combustion cars, and even tyres purpose-built for EVs can wear noticeably faster than ordinary tyres because of the loads involved.
Uneven and patchy wear
Even more frustrating than fast wear is uneven wear, where one part of the tyre is bald while the rest looks healthy. Wear concentrated on the inner or outer edge points to an alignment problem. Wear in the centre band usually means chronic over-inflation. Wear on both outer shoulders suggests under-inflation. Scalloped or cupped patches around the circumference often signal a balancing or suspension issue. Because EVs are heavy, any misalignment grinds the tyre down faster than it would on a lighter car, so these patterns appear sooner and more aggressively.
Increased road noise
Many owners notice a low drone or roar that builds with speed, especially once the tyres have a few thousand kilometres on them. EV cabins are extremely quiet because there is no engine to mask other sounds, so tyre and road noise that a petrol car would drown out becomes very audible. As the original noise-optimised tyres wear, or if they are replaced with cheaper non-EV tyres, that drone gets worse. Uneven wear also creates noise, so a sudden increase in roar is worth investigating.
Punctures and sidewall damage
Indian roads mean punctures are a fact of life, and EVs are not exempt. What is different is the cost of getting it wrong. Many EVs run wider, lower-profile tyres on larger wheels, and a hard pothole strike can pinch the sidewall against the rim and cause a bulge or a slow leak. A sidewall bulge is not repairable and means a replacement, which on an EV is a much bigger number than on a small petrol car. Tubeless tyres, which all these EVs use, are more puncture-tolerant and can usually be plug-repaired in the tread area, but never in the sidewall.
Vibration through the steering or seat
A steady vibration that comes in at a particular speed and fades away above it is almost always a wheel-balance problem, often after a pothole has thrown a balancing weight off or slightly bent a rim. On heavier EVs an unbalanced wheel transmits more energy into the car, so the vibration feels stronger and wears the tyre and suspension components faster.
Range that quietly drops
This is the symptom owners rarely connect to tyres. Soft, under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, and on an EV that translates directly into fewer kilometres per charge. Fitting the wrong replacement tyres, ones not tuned for low rolling resistance, can knock several percent off your usable range. Why it happens: the physics behind EV tyre wear
Understanding the cause makes the fixes obvious, so it is worth a short, plain explanation of why EV tyres lead a harder life.
Weight from the battery pack
The battery is heavy, often 300 to 500 kg on its own, and it sits in the floor. Every kilogram the car carries presses the tyre harder into the road, increases how much the tyre flexes as it rolls, and generates more heat inside the rubber. Heat accelerates wear. As a rough rule used across the tyre industry, each additional 450 kg of vehicle weight adds in the region of 20% more tyre wear. An electric car is essentially driving around with a heavy passenger that never gets out, all day, every day.
Instant torque
A petrol engine builds power as it revs. An electric motor delivers maximum torque from zero rpm, so the moment you press the accelerator the tyres get the full shove. That instant force is wonderful to drive but it scrubs rubber off the contact patch, particularly the driven wheels, every single time you accelerate. In stop-start city traffic, where you pull away hundreds of times a day, this adds up quickly. Heavy-footed driving multiplies the effect.
EV-specific tyres trade tread life for efficiency and quiet
To protect range and keep the cabin quiet, carmakers fit tyres designed for low rolling resistance and low noise. These use softer, specially formulated rubber compounds and particular tread patterns and often add foam liners inside to kill noise. The trade-off is that compounds optimised for efficiency and quietness do not always last as long as a hard-wearing conventional tyre. You are, in effect, getting better range and a quieter ride in exchange for visiting the tyre shop a little sooner.
Pressure that is set too low
Because EVs are heavy and tuned for efficiency, manufacturers often specify a relatively high tyre pressure. The BYD Atto 3, for example, calls for around 36 PSI. When owners or roadside shops set EV tyres to a typical small-car pressure, the tyres run soft under the car's real weight. Soft tyres flex more, build more heat, wear the shoulders, and rob range. Under-inflation is one of the most common and most avoidable causes of premature EV tyre wear in India.
Indian roads, heat and monsoon
Potholes and broken edges deliver sharp impacts that knock alignment out, bend rims and damage sidewalls. High ambient and road-surface temperatures push the rubber to work near its thermal limits, especially on long summer highway runs. The monsoon then demands that worn tyres do the one thing they cannot: clear standing water. Each of these factors individually shortens tyre life, and in India they all arrive together.
Choosing the right tyres for your EV
When the time comes to replace, the decision matters more on an EV than on a petrol car, because the wrong tyre quietly taxes your range, your noise levels and your grip. Here is how to choose well.
Get the size and load rating exactly right
Start with the size moulded on your current tyre sidewall, written like 215/60 R16. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width (the aspect ratio), and the last is the wheel diameter in inches. For reference, here are the common OE sizes on popular Indian EVs.
- Tata Nexon EV: 215/60 R16
- Tata Punch EV: 195/60 R16 on higher variants, 185/70 R15 on others
- Tata Tiago EV: 175/65 R14
- MG Comet EV: 145/70 R12
- MG ZS EV: 215/55 R17
Always confirm against your own car, because variants differ. Just as important as the size is the load index and speed rating that follow it. EVs are heavy, so they need tyres with an adequate load index. Never let a shop fit a lower-rated tyre just because it is in stock or cheaper, because an under-rated tyre on a heavy EV runs hot and can fail. Matching or exceeding the OE load and speed rating is non-negotiable.
EV-rated tyres versus ordinary tyres
A growing number of brands now sell tyres designed specifically for EVs, with reinforced construction to carry the extra weight, compounds tuned for low rolling resistance to protect range, and foam liners to cut noise. They usually carry a marking such as a small EV symbol, or a quiet or seal designation, and many premium ranges now have an EV-ready line.
Fitting a proper EV-rated tyre, or at least a high-quality low-rolling-resistance touring tyre with the correct load rating, keeps your car behaving the way the engineers intended: full range, quiet cabin, strong wet grip. Dropping to a cheap conventional tyre to save money on the day usually backfires through worse range, more noise and a shorter life, so the saving is often an illusion.
Rolling resistance versus grip
There is a genuine engineering trade-off between low rolling resistance, which helps range, and outright grip, which helps braking and cornering, especially in the wet. The good news is that modern EV tyres have narrowed this gap considerably, and the best of them deliver both efficiency and strong wet performance. For Indian conditions, do not chase the absolute lowest rolling resistance at the cost of wet grip, because the monsoon is unforgiving and braking distance on a flooded road is what keeps you safe. Noise
Because the EV cabin is so quiet, tyre noise is one of the loudest things you will hear at speed. If a quiet cabin matters to you, choose a tyre with a low noise rating, ideally one with a foam liner, and keep all four tyres the same make and model. Mixing brands across the axles can create odd noises and uneven handling.
Pressure, rotation, alignment and balancing: practical maintenance
This is where you actually save money and extend tyre life. Four routines do almost all the work.
Tyre pressure
Set your pressure to the figure on the sticker in the driver's door jamb or in the owner's manual, not to a generic number. EVs often run higher pressures than petrol cars of similar size precisely because they are heavier, and many call for figures in the 32 to 36 PSI region depending on the model and load. Check pressure cold, meaning before you have driven more than a couple of kilometres, because a warm tyre reads higher and gives a false figure. Check at least once a fortnight in India, because heat and slow leaks from minor punctures both bleed pressure. Increase to the loaded figure on the sticker when you have a full car and luggage. Correct pressure is the single cheapest way to extend tyre life and protect range.
Rotation
Rotating tyres means swapping their positions so they all wear evenly, because the driven wheels and the front wheels wear differently. For most Indian cars on standard, non-directional tyres a sensible interval is every 8,000 to 10,000 km, or at every service, whichever comes first. Given how hard EVs are on their tyres and how rough our roads are, the shorter end of that range, around 8,000 km, is the safer choice for an EV used mostly in the city. If your tyres are directional, meaning they are designed to roll in only one direction and have an arrow on the sidewall, they can usually only be swapped front to rear on the same side, so confirm the pattern with your fitter. Regular rotation is one of the most effective and least expensive ways to get even wear and full life out of an expensive EV tyre set.
Wheel alignment
Alignment sets the precise angles at which the wheels meet the road. Knocked out by potholes, it is the leading cause of fast, uneven, edge-biased wear. Have alignment checked roughly every 5,000 to 7,000 km, after any hard pothole or kerb strike, whenever you fit new tyres, and immediately if the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel sits off-centre on a straight road. On a heavy EV a small misalignment grinds the tyre down quickly, so do not wait for the next service if you feel something change. A correct alignment after a pothole season can be the difference between tyres that last and tyres that are ruined on one edge while still healthy everywhere else.
Wheel balancing
Balancing corrects tiny weight differences around each wheel and tyre so it spins smoothly. Out-of-balance wheels cause the speed-dependent vibration described earlier and wear the tyre and suspension faster. Get wheels balanced whenever you fit or rotate tyres, after any vibration appears, and after a pothole that might have thrown a weight off. On heavier EVs, good balance matters more because any imbalance hits the car with more force.

Two numbers every owner wants: how long will they last, and what will a new set cost.
How long EV tyres last in India
There is no single figure, because it depends on the car, the tyres, your driving and your roads. As a realistic guide for Indian conditions, expect somewhere in the region of 35,000 to 50,000 km from a set of EV tyres with good care, and less if you drive hard, run them under-inflated, skip rotation, or cover a lot of pockmarked city kilometres. Petrol cars on conventional tyres often see meaningfully more, which is exactly the EV trade-off this guide keeps returning to.
When to replace
Replace tyres when any of the following is true.
- The tread has worn down to or near the wear indicators, the small raised bars set into the grooves. Once the tread is level with them the tyre is legally and practically finished, and dangerous in the wet.
- There is any sidewall bulge, deep cut, or visible cord. These are not repairable and the tyre can fail without warning.
- The tyre will not hold pressure despite a proper repair, or has been repaired more than once or twice already.
- The rubber is badly cracked or perished, which happens with age and heat even on tyres with tread left, so age matters as well as kilometres.
- Wear is so uneven that grip and noise are compromised even though some tread remains.
Do not nurse a tyre through one more monsoon to save money. Wet braking on worn rubber is where worn tyres cause crashes.
Indicative replacement cost in rupees
Prices vary by brand, size, warranty and city, so treat these as indicative ranges to sanity-check a quote, not fixed prices.
- A single tyre for a small EV on 12 to 14 inch wheels, such as the MG Comet EV or Tata Tiago EV, typically falls in the region of 3,500 to 6,500 rupees fitted, depending on brand and quality.
- A single tyre in the popular 215/60 R16 size used on the Tata Nexon EV commonly ranges from roughly 7,000 to 13,000 rupees, with budget options at the lower end and premium quiet or EV-rated options at the upper end.
- Larger 17 inch tyres, such as the 215/55 R17 on the MG ZS EV, generally sit higher again, often well into five figures per tyre for premium fitments.
