Road and cabin noise
Because the powertrain is silent, tyre noise becomes the dominant sound inside an EV above about 40 to 50 kmph. There are three separate things going on: tread-pattern noise (air being pumped in and out of the tread blocks), cavity noise (the air inside the tyre resonating like a drum), and structural noise (vibration travelling up through the wheel and suspension into the body). Range loss
This one is sneaky because it has no obvious symptom. Under-inflated tyres, the wrong tyre, or simply a more aggressive non-EV tread pattern all increase rolling resistance, and on an electric car that translates directly into fewer kilometres per charge. Why it happens
None of this is random. Five forces conspire to make EV tyres a different proposition from petrol-car tyres, and understanding them makes every later decision easier.
Weight: the battery tax
An EV carries a large traction battery, and that battery is heavy. Depending on the model, an electric car can weigh several hundred kilograms more than a similarly sized petrol car. As a rough industry rule of thumb, every extra 450 kg of vehicle weight increases tyre wear by around 20 percent. More weight means more load pressing the contact patch into the road, more heat, and faster abrasion of the rubber.

Instant torque
A petrol engine builds torque as the revs climb. An electric motor delivers near-maximum torque from a standstill, the instant you touch the accelerator. Every enthusiastic getaway from a signal is, in a small way, sandpapering your tyres.
Less coasting, more regen
EVs barely coast. Lift off the accelerator and regenerative braking immediately starts slowing the car, recovering energy back into the battery. That means force is almost always being applied at the wheels โ either driving or braking โ with very little of the free-rolling, load-off time a petrol car spends coasting. EV-specific tyres are a different recipe
Many EVs ship with purpose-built tyres, and they are engineered around three priorities that often pull against each other:
- Low rolling resistance to protect range. The compound and construction are tuned to flex less and waste less energy as heat.
- Noise optimisation because the quiet cabin exposes every decibel. This includes special tread-block patterns and, on premium fitments, internal foam liners.
- Load and durability through stronger sidewalls and tougher compounds to cope with the weight and torque.

Choosing the right tyres
When it is time to replace, the single most important principle is this: match the carmaker's specification first, then optimise. Here is how to read what you need and weigh the trade-offs.
Get the size and load rating exactly right
Your factory tyre size is printed on the placard inside the driver's door jamb and in the owner's manual. For reference, common Indian EV original-equipment sizes include:
- Tata Nexon EV โ 215/60 R16 95H on most variants.
- Tata Tiago EV โ 175/65 R14.
- MG ZS EV โ 215/55 R17 94V.
- Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Punch EV โ check the door placard, as fitments vary by variant and model year.
Read the markings carefully. In 215/60 R16 95H, the 215 is the width in millimetres, 60 is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width), R16 is the rim diameter in inches, 95 is the load index, and H is the speed rating. On an EV, do not drop the load index to save money โ the heavier car needs that load capacity. Matching or exceeding the original load index and speed rating is non-negotiable for safety.
EV-rated versus ordinary tyres
You will see tyres marketed specifically for EVs, sometimes carrying an EV marking or names that signal it. These are built for the weight, torque and noise of electric cars, and for low rolling resistance. You are not legally required to fit an EV-specific tyre, and a good-quality conventional tyre in the correct size and load rating is safe. But there are real consequences to going generic: expect somewhat more road noise, potentially shorter life under EV torque, and usually a small loss of range. Rolling resistance versus grip versus noise
This is the central trade-off, and there is no free lunch:
- Maximise low rolling resistance and you protect range, but very hard, efficiency-focused compounds can feel less grippy in the wet.
- Maximise grip with a softer, stickier compound and you get confidence in the monsoon, but you sacrifice some range and the tread wears faster.
- Maximise quietness with foam liners and clever tread patterns and you get a serene cabin, but those tyres cost more.
For most Indian EV owners, the sensible middle ground is a premium touring tyre in the correct size with a strong wet-grip rating and, if the budget allows, noise-reduction technology. Understanding quiet-tyre and foam technology
If cabin noise is your main complaint, foam-lined tyres are worth knowing about. After a tyre is manufactured, some premium tyres get a layer of polyurethane foam bonded to the inside of the tread. That foam absorbs the cavity resonance โ the drumming of the air inside the tyre โ before it can travel up into the body of the car. Pressure: the single biggest lever
Correct tyre pressure does more for an EV than almost anything else. It protects range, evens out wear, reduces noise, and keeps you safe. The right number is on the door placard, not on the tyre sidewall โ the sidewall figure is the maximum the tyre can take, not the recommended running pressure.
- Check pressure cold, before driving, at least once a fortnight and before any long trip. Heat from driving and from Indian summers inflates the reading, so a hot check looks higher than reality.
- Follow the placard, including the higher recommended pressure for a fully loaded car if your manual lists one.
- Do not chase range by massively over-inflating. A little firmer can help efficiency, but too high reduces the contact patch, hurts wet grip and braking, wears the centre of the tread, and makes the ride harsher and noisier.
- Mind nitrogen versus air. Nitrogen is fine and holds pressure slightly more stably with temperature, but plain air is perfectly safe โ the discipline of checking regularly matters far more than what is inside.
A tyre running even a few PSI low will wear its shoulders, run hot, drone, and quietly steal range. On a heavy EV, the penalty is bigger than on a light petrol car.
Rotation: spread the wear
Because EV tyres wear faster and often unevenly, rotation matters more, not less. A sensible interval is every 12,000 to 16,000 km, or at every service, swapping the tyres between positions so they wear evenly and you replace all four together rather than two at a time. Alignment: chase uneven wear to its source
If your tyres are wearing on one edge, the steering pulls to one side, or the wheel sits off-centre on a straight road, you almost certainly need a wheel alignment. Indian potholes and kerb strikes knock alignment out regularly, and a heavy EV with instant torque punishes a misaligned set quickly. Balancing: kill the vibration
Wheel balancing corrects tiny weight differences around each wheel and tyre. Out-of-balance wheels cause that speed-dependent steering shimmy and accelerate uneven wear. Because there is no engine vibration to hide it, EV owners feel imbalance more acutely, so it is worth getting right.
Puncture handling on an EV
Many EVs do not carry a full-size spare โ they ship with a puncture repair kit or, on some models, a space-saver. Know which you have before you are stranded. A few rules specific to EVs:
- Sidewall damage is fatal. A nail in the central tread can often be plugged or patched, but a cut, bulge or puncture in the sidewall means replacement, no exceptions.
- A repair kit is a get-home measure, not a permanent fix. Get the tyre professionally inspected and properly repaired or replaced soon after.
- Mind the load rating on any replacement, even a temporary one, because the car is heavy.
- Replace in matched pairs or sets where the tread difference is significant, so handling and wear stay even.
Tyre life and replacement cost in India
So how long should EV tyres last, and what will a new set cost? Real-world figures vary widely with driving style, road quality and tyre choice, but here is a realistic picture for Indian conditions. Treat all rupee figures as indicative ranges, not quotes โ prices move with brand, size, model and city.
How long they last
Owner reports and forum data put typical EV tyre life anywhere from roughly 13,000 km at the harsh, hard-driven end to 27,000 km or more for a gently driven car on good tyres with disciplined maintenance. The honest takeaway is that an EV will generally need tyres sooner than a comparable petrol car, and the gap is real. Gentle throttle, correct pressure, regular rotation and alignment are what push you toward the upper end of that range.
When to replace
- Legal minimum tread depth in India is 1.6 mm, but that is the absolute floor, not a target.
- For wet and monsoon safety, replace at around 3 mm. Wet grip and aquaplaning resistance fall off sharply below that, long before you reach the legal limit.
- Replace any tyre older than about five to six years regardless of tread, because rubber hardens and loses wet grip with age. Check the four-digit date code on the sidewall โ for example 2224 means the 22nd week of 2024.
