For EV owners, that test is harder than most people realise, because an electric car asks more of its tyres than an equivalent petrol car ever did.

Why monsoon tyre safety is different on an EV
Two facts about electric cars change the tyre story completely, and both matter most when the road is wet.
The first is weight. An EV carries a large traction battery under the floor, and that pack is heavy. A typical mid-size electric car weighs several hundred kilograms more than the same-size petrol model. That extra mass presses down on the tyres all the time, so every braking, cornering and stopping manoeuvre demands more from the rubber. On wet roads, a heavier car needs a longer distance to stop, and the tyre has to clear more water to keep biting into the surface.
The second is instant torque. An electric motor delivers its full pulling power from a standstill, the moment you touch the accelerator. A petrol engine builds up to its peak gradually. That immediacy is what makes EVs feel quick and effortless, but it also means the driven wheels can be hit with a sudden surge of force. On a dry road the tyre copes. On a wet road, especially pulling away from a junction or up a damp parking ramp, that surge can briefly overwhelm grip and spin the wheels. Drive that way every day and the tread wears noticeably faster.
Put those together with Indian conditions, which include high heat that softens rubber, abrasive and broken road surfaces, and a monsoon that turns roads into rivers, and you have a vehicle where tyre choice, pressure and condition are not minor details. They are central to whether the car is safe in the rain.
Common tyre and wheel problems on EVs
Before the why, here is the what. These are the issues Indian EV owners most often raise, and recognising them early is half the battle.
- Fast tread wear. Many owners are surprised when their EV needs new tyres well before they expected. As a rough rule, EVs can wear tyres roughly 20 to 30 percent faster than a comparable petrol car driven the same way. A set that might have lasted 45,000 to 50,000 km on a petrol hatchback can be worn out far sooner on a heavy, torquey EV with an enthusiastic driver.
- Uneven and patchy wear. Tyres that wear more on the inner or outer edge, or develop a scalloped, cupped feel, usually point to alignment or suspension issues rather than the tyre itself. EVs are unforgiving here because the extra weight magnifies any geometry error.
- Road noise and a droning hum. EVs are eerily quiet, so tyre noise that a petrol engine would have masked is now clearly audible inside the cabin. Worn, hardened or wrongly chosen tyres can drone, especially on coarse highway surfaces.
- Punctures and slow leaks. Indian roads serve up nails, sharp stones and potholes. EVs are heavier, so a pothole strike loads the tyre and rim harder, raising the chance of a sidewall bulge, a pinch cut or a bent alloy. Many EVs also ship without a spare wheel, relying on a puncture repair kit, which changes how you handle a flat.
- Vibration through the wheel or seat. A steering wheel that shimmies at a particular speed, or a vibration felt through the floor, usually means wheels are out of balance, an alloy is bent, or a tyre has developed a flat spot or internal damage.
- Range that quietly drops. Under-inflated tyres, the wrong tyre type, or excessive wear all raise rolling resistance or hurt efficiency, and your range falls. Because the loss is gradual, owners often blame the battery when the tyres are the real culprit.

Why it happens: weight, torque, EV-specific tyres and Indian roads
The weight penalty
Carrying a battery pack means the static load on every tyre is high before you even move. Tyre engineers respond by building reinforced tyres rated to carry more, and you load them further every time you brake or corner. More load means more heat, more flex in the rubber, and more wear. In the wet, the heavier car also takes longer to stop, so the margin for error shrinks exactly when the road is most slippery.
The torque effect
Instant torque is brilliant for overtaking and for darting through city traffic, but the driven tyres absorb that energy. Each hard launch scrubs a tiny amount of rubber off the tread. Multiply that by every traffic light in a daily commute and the wear adds up. The fix is not to drive slowly forever; it is to choose tyres engineered for EV torque and to use a smoother right foot in the wet, where a sudden surge can break traction.
EV-specific tyres and the grip trade-off
Many EVs leave the factory on special tyres designed for electric cars. These usually aim for three things at once: low rolling resistance to protect range, low noise to suit the quiet cabin, and enough strength to carry the weight. You will see this on the sidewall as load markings such as XL (Extra Load) or the newer HL (High Load) rating, which indicates a tyre built to carry significantly more than a standard tyre of the same size. Some premium EV tyres add an internal layer of acoustic foam, marketed as technologies like ContiSilent or Michelin Acoustic, which absorbs the booming noise from inside the tyre cavity and noticeably quietens the cabin.
The catch is the trade-off at the heart of every tyre. A compound tuned hard for low rolling resistance, to squeeze out maximum range, can give away some wet grip if it is not designed carefully. A compound tuned for maximum wet grip can wear faster and add rolling resistance. Good EV tyres balance these intelligently, but a cheap tyre chosen only for price, or a non-EV tyre fitted because it was available, can leave you with worse wet braking, more noise and reduced range all at once. This is why fitting the wrong tyre to an EV is a genuine safety and cost issue, not just a comfort one.
Indian roads, heat and the monsoon
Indian conditions push everything harder. Sustained high temperatures soften rubber and accelerate ageing, so tyres can harden and crack with age even if the tread looks fine. Rough, patched and gravelly surfaces are abrasive. Potholes, common and worse after rain, deliver sharp impacts that bend rims and cut sidewalls.
Then comes the monsoon, where the central safety concern is aquaplaning, also called hydroplaning. This is when a wedge of water builds up in front of the tyre faster than the tread can channel it away. The tyre lifts onto the water film and loses contact with the road. When that happens, steering and braking do almost nothing, because the tyre is no longer touching tarmac. Two things make aquaplaning more likely: higher speed, because the tread has less time to clear water, and shallow tread, because there is less depth to channel the water out. A tyre worn near the legal minimum has a fraction of the water-clearing ability of a fresh one. On a heavy EV that already needs more distance to stop, that is a dangerous combination.
A heavy car with instant torque is also more prone to a brief loss of traction when pulling away on a wet, painted road marking or a smooth, polished surface. The torque arrives instantly, the grip is low, and the wheels can slip for a moment before the car's traction control intervenes.
Choosing the right tyres for your EV
Getting the tyre right is the single biggest thing you can do for monsoon safety. Work through these in order.
Match the original-equipment size and rating exactly
Stay with the size your carmaker specifies unless a tyre professional advises a proven alternative. The size and the load and speed rating are chosen to handle the car's weight and performance. As a reference for popular Indian EVs:
- Tata Nexon EV: commonly 215/60 R16 on most variants, with larger 20-inch wheels on certain top trims.
- Tata Tigor EV: 175/65 R14.
- MG ZS EV: a 17-inch fitment, with both front and rear typically inflated to around 34 psi.
The numbers matter. In a size like 215/60 R16 95H, the 95 is the load index and the H is the speed rating. On an EV you should never drop below the load index your car was supplied with, because the tyre must carry the battery weight safely. If the original tyres carry an XL or HL marking, replace them with tyres of at least the same load capability.
EV-rated versus normal tyres
You do not always have to buy a tyre badged specifically for EVs, but you do need a tyre that meets the EV's requirements: the correct load rating, a tread pattern with good wet performance, and ideally low noise. A purpose-built EV tyre will usually do all of this and protect your range, at a higher price. A good-quality conventional tyre with a strong wet rating and the right load index can also work well. What you must avoid is choosing a tyre that is underrated for the load or has poor wet grip simply because it is cheaper.
Rolling resistance versus grip versus noise
Decide what matters most for your driving and be honest about it.
- If maximum range is your priority and most of your driving is dry-weather highway cruising, a low-rolling-resistance EV tyre makes sense, provided its wet rating is still good.
- If you drive a lot in heavy monsoon conditions or on fast wet highways, prioritise wet grip and a deeper, more aggressive water-channelling tread, even at a small cost to range.
- If cabin noise bothers you, look for tyres with acoustic foam or a noise-optimised tread, which suit the EV's quiet character.

Pressure, rotation, alignment and balancing
Buying the right tyre is half the job. Maintaining it correctly is what keeps it safe through the monsoon.
Tyre pressure: the cheapest safety upgrade
Correct pressure is the most important and most neglected tyre habit. EVs are heavy, so the recommended pressures are often higher than on a comparable petrol car, and the figure is printed on a sticker inside the driver's door frame or in the owner's manual. As a real-world reference, the Tata Tigor EV is commonly run around 33 psi front and 38 psi rear, while the MG ZS EV runs around 34 psi all round. Always use your own car's specified figure.
- Check pressures at least once a fortnight, and before any long monsoon drive, when the tyres are cold.
- Under-inflation is the enemy in the rain. A soft tyre flexes more, runs hotter, wears at the edges, raises rolling resistance and cuts your range, and crucially it clears water less effectively, raising the aquaplaning risk.
- Over-inflation reduces the contact patch and can make grip nervous and the ride harsh.
- If your car lets you, consider nitrogen for more stable pressure, but plain air checked regularly is perfectly fine.

Rotation
Tyres wear unevenly because the front and rear of the car carry different loads and do different jobs. Rotating tyres, swapping their positions, evens out that wear and extends overall tyre life. A common interval is every 5,000 to 10,000 km. On a heavy, torquey EV, sticking to the shorter end of that range is sensible.
Alignment
Wheel alignment sets the precise angles at which your tyres meet the road. Poor alignment causes rapid, uneven wear, pulls the car to one side, and makes the steering feel vague, all of which are worse in the wet. The usual recommendation is to check alignment every 10,000 km or six months, but on India's broken roads, and especially after a hard pothole strike during the rains, many EV owners sensibly shorten this to every 7,000 to 8,000 km. The extra EV weight magnifies any geometry error, so do not ignore a car that has started pulling to one side.

Balancing
Wheel balancing corrects tiny weight differences around each wheel and tyre. Out-of-balance wheels cause vibration through the steering or floor, usually at a specific speed, and they wear tyres unevenly. Get wheels balanced whenever you fit new tyres and roughly every 5,000 to 8,000 km, or immediately if you feel a new vibration.
A quick monsoon-readiness check you can do yourself:
- Look at the tread depth. Every tyre has small raised wear indicators set into the grooves. When the tread wears level with them, the tyre has reached its limit and must be replaced. For wet safety, do not wait that long.
- Inspect for damage: cuts, cracks, embedded nails or stones, and any bulge in the sidewall, which is a serious failure risk and needs immediate replacement.
- Check the age. Find the four-digit code on the sidewall, where the first two digits are the week and the last two the year of manufacture. In India's heat, rubber hardens with age, so a tyre several years old should be assessed even if it looks lightly used.
- Confirm pressures are set to the car's specification, cold.
Tyre life and replacement cost in India
How long EV tyres last depends heavily on driving style, road quality and maintenance. A well-treated set on Indian roads might cover anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 km, but an enthusiastically driven, poorly maintained EV can wear tyres far sooner because of the weight and torque effects described above.
On price, tyres for popular Indian EVs span a wide range depending on brand, size and technology. As an indicative guide, tyres for the Tata Nexon EV are available from around 7,500 to 8,000 rupees per tyre at the affordable end, rising to roughly 12,000 to 13,000 rupees or more per tyre for premium options, with very large performance or 20-inch sizes costing significantly more. Replacing a full set of four therefore typically runs from roughly 30,000 rupees upwards on a popular EV, and considerably more on cars with bigger wheels or specialist EV tyres. Smaller EVs on 14-inch tyres, such as the Tigor EV, cost less per tyre. These figures are indicative and move with brand, city and offers, so always get a current quote.
The takeaway is that EV tyres tend to cost more to replace than the tyres on an equivalent petrol car, both because the sizes and load ratings are more demanding and because the EV-optimised compounds and acoustic features command a premium. Treat tyres as a real running cost of EV ownership and budget for them.
Replace your tyres when any of these is true:
- The tread has worn down to the wear indicators, or is shallow enough that wet grip and aquaplaning resistance are clearly compromised. For monsoon safety, replace well before the absolute legal minimum.
- There is sidewall damage, a bulge, a deep cut, or a puncture that cannot be safely repaired, for example one in the sidewall or shoulder.
- The tyre is old and the rubber has hardened or cracked, even if tread remains.
- The car has lost wet grip, taken longer to stop in the rain, or started aquaplaning at speeds it used to handle.
