Your electric car or scooter is supposed to be the smart one. Then one morning the navigation arrow is parked three lanes over in a building you have never entered, the map hasn't been updated since before that new flyover opened, the touchscreen is frozen on the reverse camera, and the connected-car app on your phone insists your vehicle was "last synced" two months ago. The good news first: the large majority of GPS and navigation faults on Indian EVs are software and connectivity issues, not broken hardware. That means many of them are genuinely fixable at home in ten minutes — a reset, a re-pair, an app reinstall, or simply waiting for an over-the-air (OTA) update to land. A smaller number are real hardware faults — a failing touchscreen, a dead instrument cluster, a loose GPS antenna or a telematics module that has lost its SIM connection — and those need a workshop.

The whole game, then, is telling those two situations apart before you spend money. Why this matters for Indian EV owners

On a petrol car, the infotainment is a nice-to-have. On an EV it is closer to mission-critical. The same screen that runs your maps usually also shows your remaining range, controls regenerative braking modes, displays the charging status and tyre pressure, and on newer cars handles climate and even ADAS settings. When that screen freezes or the GPS wanders, you are not just losing Google Maps — you can lose visibility of how many kilometres you have left before the next charger. On a road trip between cities where DC fast chargers are still spaced out, that is a real anxiety, not a cosmetic one.

India also stresses connected-car systems harder than most markets. Patchy mobile coverage on highways, urban canyons of tall buildings that bounce satellite signals, basement and stilt parking that swallows GPS entirely, frequent app and OTA rollouts that ship with fresh bugs, and regulations that require carmakers to use local SIM connectivity rather than roaming — all of this adds up to a lot of "why is my EV's navigation broken" searches. Understanding the root cause saves you an unnecessary, and sometimes expensive, trip to the service centre.

Common software, infotainment and connected-car problems owners report

These are the symptoms that come up again and again across Indian EV owner forums and groups, regardless of brand.

  • GPS drift and "Searching GPS." The blue location dot jumps to a wrong road, lags several seconds behind your actual position, or the system shows "Searching GPS / Server Unreachable" and never gets a fix. Ola S1 owners have widely reported "Searching GPS" for most of a ride; MG i-SMART users have reported the app placing the car in another country entirely (a tell-tale "thinks I'm in Belgium" symptom) when the car cannot reach the server.
  • Outdated maps. The car routes you down a road that has been one-way for a year, misses a new flyover or expressway, or cannot find an address that clearly exists. This is almost always a stale offline map database, not a GPS fault.
  • Navigation rerouting for no reason. The route recalculates and detours repeatedly mid-drive without any obvious cause. Tata Nexon owners in particular have flagged the built-in navigation rerouting unexpectedly on long drives.
  • Frozen or unresponsive touchscreen. The display hangs — often while switching out of reverse, on boot, or after a few hours of use — and stops responding to taps, sometimes for several minutes. The Harman units on the Nexon (7-inch and 10.25-inch) have a known reputation for this kind of occasional hang.
  • Infotainment reboots, black screen or boot loop. The screen goes black, restarts on its own, or gets stuck on the logo. This is more common immediately after an OTA update.
  • Connected-car app won't connect or sync. The companion app — Tata iRA / iRA.ev, MG i-SMART, Ola Electric, Ather, and others — shows "last synced" days or weeks ago, fails to bind to the vehicle, won't show live location, or refuses to push commands like remote AC or door lock.
  • Bluetooth and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay drops. The phone keeps disconnecting, CarPlay won't launch, or audio and navigation stutter. This sits next to GPS problems because owners often use phone-projected maps as a workaround.
  • A failed or stuck OTA update. The download stalls at a percentage, the update fails part-way, or the car comes back from an update with new bugs. Tata's Harrier.ev, for example, needed a significant OTA (bringing the infotainment to version 17.5 and above) specifically to stabilise software and connectivity after early complaints.
  • Connectivity drops while driving. Live traffic, remote features and OTA capability rely on the car's onboard SIM. On highways with thin coverage, the connection simply drops.

What actually causes these problems

It helps to group the causes, because the cause decides the fix.

Software and firmware bugs

Modern EV infotainment is a small computer running an operating system — MoveOS on Ola, Tata's ConnectNext / iRA-linked software, MG's i-SMART stack, and so on. Like any software it ships with bugs, memory leaks that cause slow-downs over days of uptime, and edge cases. A unit that has not been restarted in weeks can simply run out of working memory and start hanging — which is exactly why a reset fixes so many freezes. The map application is a separate piece of software again, with its own offline map database that goes stale until refreshed.

Failed or incomplete OTA updates

OTA updates are how carmakers fix bugs without a workshop visit — and they are genuinely the cure for a large share of these complaints. But an OTA that drops connection halfway, or that the car tries to install on a low 12V battery, can leave the system half-updated and unstable: black screens, boot loops, missing features. The fix is usually to let the manufacturer re-push or repair the update, not to replace hardware.

Connectivity, SIM, network and subscription issues

Connected features run over an embedded SIM (eSIM) inside the car's Telematics Control Unit (TCU). In India, regulations push carmakers to use local-carrier connectivity rather than long-term roaming, and the eSIM is tied to a data plan — MG, for instance, typically bundles one year of free i-SMART connectivity with around 2 GB of data a month. Several things can break here:

  • The connected-services subscription or free trial has quietly expired, switching off live tracking and OTA.
  • The onboard SIM has deactivated or lost provisioning — owners have reported customer care insisting the SIM is "active" while the car shows no coverage for weeks.
  • The car is in an area, or a basement, with no mobile signal, so it cannot reach the manufacturer's server.

None of these are GPS-receiver faults. The satellite fix can be fine while the cloud link — which the app depends on — is down.

Infotainment and cluster hardware

Sometimes it really is hardware. Touchscreens develop dead zones or stop responding; the display panel itself can fail; the instrument cluster (which on many EVs shows range and warnings) can go dark or glitch; ribbon connectors and solder joints fatigue with heat and vibration. Indian summers and rough roads accelerate all of this. A unit that freezes every single time, survives resets unchanged, or shows physical display artefacts is pointing at hardware.

GPS antenna, sensors and cameras

The GPS receiver relies on an antenna — often a small puck near the windscreen or roof — feeding it. A loose, disconnected or poorly placed antenna causes persistent drift and weak fixes. This is precisely why Ola Electric, when S1 owners complained of bad navigation, rolled out a free hardware upgrade that added a better GPS antenna to improve signal reception. Reverse cameras and ADAS sensors are separate modules that can fault independently of the maps.

Indian network and environment conditions

Finally, conditions amplify everything: dense high-rise areas reflect satellite signals (multipath error), tunnels and basements block them, highway dead-zones cut the data link, and the sheer pace of OTA rollouts means fresh bugs arrive regularly. A lot of "drift" is simply the environment, and clears the moment you reach open sky and good coverage.

Fixes you can try yourself, step by step

Work through these in order. Most GPS, freezing and app problems are solved before you reach the workshop section — and all of these are safe to do yourself.

1. Soft reset (restart the infotainment)

This clears the temporary memory and fixes the majority of freezes and slow-downs.

  1. On most cars, press and hold the power or home button on the screen (or the volume knob) for 10 to 20 seconds until the display goes black and the logo reappears.
  2. Let it boot fully — give it a minute before tapping anything.
  3. Re-open navigation and check the GPS dot.

On a scooter like an Ola or Ather, switch the vehicle off completely, wait, and switch it back on rather than using sleep mode.

2. Let it acquire a fresh GPS fix

If the dot is drifting or "searching," the receiver may just need a clear view of the sky.

  1. Drive out of any basement, covered or stilt parking into the open.
  2. Stay stationary in an open area for two to three minutes so the receiver can lock onto enough satellites.
  3. If you have just travelled a very long distance with the car switched off (or it has been off for weeks), the first fix can take longer — this is normal.

3. Re-pair the phone and reconnect projection

For Bluetooth, CarPlay or Android Auto drops that push you onto phone maps:

  1. On the car screen, delete or "forget" the existing phone pairing.
  2. On your phone, forget the car under Bluetooth settings too.
  3. Restart both, then pair fresh. For wired CarPlay / Android Auto, try a different, good-quality USB cable and the correct USB port (some ports are charge-only).

4. Update or reinstall the connected-car app

For "last synced ages ago," won't-bind or no-live-location issues in the iRA, i-SMART, Ola or Ather app:

  1. Update the app from the Play Store or App Store — old app versions are a common culprit.
  2. If it still won't sync, log out, uninstall, reinstall, and log back in. Service centres themselves frequently advise this as the first step.
  3. Re-link or re-bind the vehicle to your account if prompted, and grant location and background permissions to the app.

5. Check your connected-services subscription and SIM status

  1. In the app or your account, confirm the connected-services plan / free trial is still active. Expired plans silently disable live tracking and OTA.
  2. If the plan is active but nothing connects, raise a ticket with the brand and ask them to re-provision the onboard SIM. For Tata, owners are asked to email iRA support with their registered mobile number and vehicle chassis number.

6. Trigger or re-attempt the OTA / map update — on a healthy battery

  1. Park where there is strong mobile signal (or connect the car's Wi-Fi if it supports it).
  2. Make sure the 12V battery is healthy and, ideally, the car is plugged in or recently driven — never start a big update on a weak battery.
  3. Go to Settings and check for a software or map update; let it complete fully without switching off mid-way.

7. Hard reset to factory settings (last self-service step)

If freezes persist, a factory reset of the infotainment clears corrupted settings. Note this wipes your saved pairings, home/work and preferences.

  1. Find "Factory data reset" / "Reset to default" in the infotainment settings menu.
  2. Confirm, let it reboot, and set up the system again from scratch.
  3. If the problem returns immediately even after this, you are now looking at a likely hardware or firmware-level fault — stop here and get it diagnosed.

If you have done all of the above and the screen still freezes every time, the GPS still drifts in open sky with good signal, or the app simply refuses to ever connect despite an active SIM, the issue has crossed from "try it yourself" into "needs diagnosis."

When it needs the brand or dealer versus an independent service

Being honest about this split matters, because going to the wrong place wastes time and money.

Go to the brand or authorised dealer when:

  • The fault is clearly software or firmware — a buggy build, a feature that broke after an update, navigation logic that misbehaves. Only the manufacturer can push the corrected OTA or reflash the official firmware. An independent shop cannot rewrite Tata's or MG's proprietary software.
  • The onboard SIM, eSIM provisioning or connected-services subscription needs re-activating. That is account-and-carrier side, controlled by the brand.
  • The vehicle is in warranty and the part is covered — let the dealer replace it on the manufacturer's cost, not yours (more on warranty below).
  • There is an official recall or service campaign for your model's infotainment, which several EVs have had.

An independent EV specialist like ev.care is the better call when:

  • You need an impartial software-versus-hardware diagnosis before committing to an expensive dealer part — confirming whether that frozen screen is a firmware bug or a dying display.

  • It is a connectivity, antenna or wiring problem — a loose GPS antenna, a damaged harness, a TCU connection — that is fundamentally an electrical-hardware fix rather than a software push.

Hardware faults and repair, with indicative INR costs

When diagnosis points to hardware, here is a realistic picture. Treat every figure below as indicative only — actual prices vary widely by brand, model, OEM versus aftermarket part, and city. Always get a written quote after diagnosis.

  • GPS antenna repair or replacement. Often the cheapest fix. The antenna element itself is inexpensive (a few hundred rupees as a part), so cost is mostly labour to access, re-route or reseat it. Indicative all-in: roughly ₹800 to ₹3,500, depending on how buried the antenna is. A re-seat of a merely loose connector can be even less.
  • Instrument cluster / MID (digital display) repair or replacement. A glitchy or dead cluster can sometimes be board-repaired; a full replacement panel for EV clusters commonly falls in the ₹4,000 to ₹20,000+ range depending on size and whether it is a simple LCD or a large digital unit. OEM cluster assemblies for premium EVs sit at the higher end.
  • Touchscreen / infotainment head-unit repair or replacement. If only the touch digitiser or display is faulty, a panel-level repair is far cheaper than a whole unit. Replacing the head unit varies enormously: capable aftermarket Android units for popular EVs like the Nexon run roughly ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 fitted, while a genuine OEM infotainment assembly for a higher-end model can run well past that. Note that an aftermarket unit may not talk to the car's proprietary connected features — discuss the trade-off before swapping.
  • Telematics Control Unit (TCU) / connectivity module. This is the box holding the eSIM and modem. Reseating a connector or replacing the SIM provisioning is cheap-to-free; replacing the whole TCU as an OEM part is the priciest item here and is usually a dealer job, often four figures and up, because it ties into the car's network and security.
  • Reverse camera or ADAS sensor (if implicated). Independent of maps, but sometimes diagnosed alongside; cameras are typically a few thousand rupees plus calibration where required.

The pattern is consistent: connector reseats and antenna fixes are cheap, panel-level display repairs are mid-range, and full OEM assembly swaps (head unit, cluster, TCU) are the expensive end you want to avoid unless genuinely necessary. A proper diagnosis exists precisely to keep you off the expensive end when a cheaper repair will do.

Warranty — what's covered and how to claim

Infotainment, the instrument cluster and connected-car electronics are generally covered under your EV's standard vehicle warranty (commonly three years, sometimes extendable), as electrical components — separate from the much longer battery warranty. That means a genuine touchscreen, cluster or telematics defect inside the warranty period should be repaired or replaced free of charge by the brand.

A few practical points:

  • Software bugs are fixed by OTA, not warranty claims. You do not "claim" a buggy map — you wait for, or request, the manufacturer's update. Keep the system updated and report persistent bugs to the brand so they are logged.
  • Connected-services connectivity (the SIM data plan) is usually a subscription, not warranty. Free for an initial period, then payable — an expired plan is not a fault and won't be repaired as one.
  • Keep records. Note the date a fault started, take a short video of the freeze or the drift, and log every service-centre interaction. A documented, repeating fault is far easier to get replaced under warranty than a vague verbal complaint.
  • Aftermarket modifications can void coverage. Fitting a third-party head unit yourself may affect warranty on related electronics — check before you do it.

To claim: report the fault to your authorised service centre (and the brand's connected-car support line for app/SIM issues), get the complaint registered with a job number, and insist the diagnosis is documented. FAQ

Why does my EV's GPS show the wrong location or keep drifting?

Most often it is environment or signal, not a broken receiver. Tall buildings, tunnels, basement and stilt parking, and highway dead-zones all degrade the satellite fix and the data link the app relies on. Drive into open sky, stay still for two to three minutes for a fresh fix, and check whether the connected-services SIM has signal. If drift persists even in clear conditions with good coverage, a loose or poorly placed GPS antenna is the likely hardware cause — and that is a relatively inexpensive fix.

My infotainment touchscreen is frozen. Is it broken, or can I fix it myself?

Try a soft reset first — hold the power/home button or volume knob for 10 to 20 seconds until it reboots. This clears the temporary memory and fixes most one-off freezes, including the well-known reverse-gear hang on some Harman units. If it still freezes, do a factory reset from the settings menu (this wipes your pairings). Only if it freezes every time and survives a factory reset is it likely a genuine hardware fault needing repair.

My connected-car app says "last synced" weeks ago and won't connect. What now?

Update the app, then log out, uninstall, reinstall and log back in — service centres recommend this first, and it resolves a large share of cases. If it still won't sync, check that your connected-services subscription or free trial is active, and ask the brand to re-provision the onboard SIM (Tata owners email iRA support with their registered number and chassis number). A car that shows no coverage despite an "active" SIM is a provisioning issue for the brand to fix, not something an app reinstall alone can solve.

A software update failed and now my screen is glitchy or stuck. Help?

Do not panic and do not assume the hardware is dead. A half-completed OTA commonly causes black screens, reboots or missing features. Park somewhere with strong signal, ensure the 12V battery is healthy (or the car is plugged in), and re-attempt the update so it can finish cleanly. If the unit is stuck in a boot loop, the manufacturer can re-push or reflash the firmware at the dealer — this is a software recovery, not usually a paid hardware replacement.

Why do my maps route me down wrong or one-way roads?

That is almost always an outdated offline map database, not a GPS fault. New flyovers, changed one-ways and fresh addresses only appear once the map data is refreshed. Update the maps and the car's software from the settings menu, on a good connection. As a workaround, project Google Maps or another phone map via Android Auto or CarPlay, which updates far more frequently than most built-in map databases.

Will my warranty cover a faulty screen or cluster, and what about the GPS app?

A genuine hardware defect in the touchscreen, instrument cluster or telematics module is generally covered under the standard vehicle warranty (often three years) and should be repaired or replaced free by the brand within that period. Software bugs, by contrast, are not "claimed" — they are fixed by OTA updates, so keep the system updated and report persistent bugs. Connected-services data (the SIM plan) is a subscription, not warranty.
