An electric car asks more of its air-conditioning system than any petrol or diesel car ever did. In an Indian summer, where cabin temperatures inside a parked car routinely cross 60°C, the AC is not just about comfort. On many EVs the same refrigerant circuit that cools your face also helps keep the high-voltage battery within a safe temperature window. When the AC under-performs, you lose comfort, you lose driving range, and on some models the car will quietly steal cooling away from you to protect the battery instead.

Why EV AC matters more in India
A combustion car runs its AC compressor off a belt connected to the engine. An EV has no engine and no belt. Instead it uses an electric compressor driven directly by the high-voltage battery, often at 300 to 400 volts or more. That single design change has two big consequences for owners.
First, every minute of cooling draws energy straight from the same battery that moves the car. In peak Delhi or Chennai heat, aggressive cabin cooling can cut real-world range meaningfully, especially in city traffic where the car is not recovering much energy through regenerative braking. A healthy, properly charged AC system cools efficiently and protects your range. A system that is low on refrigerant or clogged with dust has to run longer and harder, draining the battery faster for less cooling.
Second, on many modern EVs the cabin AC and the battery thermal management share the same refrigerant loop. If the battery is getting too hot, the car's software can prioritise cooling the pack over cooling you. This is by design and it is protecting an expensive component, but it explains why some owners feel the AC suddenly goes weak on a long, hot highway run. Common air-conditioning and climate control problems
These are the symptoms Indian EV owners report most often. You may have one or several at once.
- Weak or no cooling. Air comes out but it is barely cool, or it cools at the start and fades after 15 to 20 minutes of driving. This is the single most common complaint, and in the Indian summer it is also the most frustrating.
- Slow cabin cool-down, especially at the rear. The front vents get cold but the back seats stay warm for a long time. Owners of larger EVs and models with weaker rear ducting notice this most after the car has been baking in a parking lot.
- AC cuts out or goes weak on hot highway runs. Cooling feels fine in the morning, then drops off in the afternoon heat. On some Tata and MG models, owners have found a workaround of switching drive modes briefly, which suggests the software is throttling the AC to manage heat rather than a hardware failure.
- Bad smell when you switch on the AC. A musty, damp, or sour odour in the first minute is extremely common in humid Indian cities and during the monsoon. A sharp chemical or sweet smell is different and more concerning.
- Noise: whine, rattle, hiss, or buzz. A new electrical whine, a rattle from behind the dashboard, a hiss, or a buzzing blower are all worth investigating. EV compressors are normally very quiet, so new noise stands out.
- Foggy windscreen or water on the floor. Misting that will not clear, or a puddle in the front passenger footwell, points to airflow or drainage problems rather than cooling itself.
- Higher battery drain with AC on. If your range estimate drops sharply the moment you enable climate control, and it was not always this bad, the AC may be working inefficiently.
What causes these problems
Most EV AC faults trace back to one of six areas. Indian heat and dust make several of them worse.
The electric compressor
The compressor is the heart of the system. In an EV it is an electrically driven, hermetically sealed unit running on high voltage. Because it is sealed with no external shaft, it leaks refrigerant far less than an old belt-driven compressor. But it is also more delicate in one crucial way: the high-voltage motor inside is cooled by the refrigerant and oil mix, so it must use a special non-conductive oil called POE oil. If the wrong, conductive oil ever gets into the system, the insulation can break down and the compressor can fail electrically, sometimes triggering a high-voltage fault that disables more than just the AC. This is exactly why EV AC service is not the same job as petrol-car AC service.
Refrigerant level and leaks
EV AC systems are sealed for life and are not meant to be topped up on a schedule. They use refrigerants such as R1234yf on newer cars or R134a on older ones, and a few use R290. Over many years, tiny leaks at joints, the condenser, or seals can let charge escape. Performance does not drop gently. Once a system loses roughly a fifth of its refrigerant, cooling falls off sharply and the compressor runs much longer to achieve less, hurting both comfort and range. Blower motor and airflow
The blower pushes cooled air into the cabin. A failing blower motor causes weak airflow even when the refrigerant is fine, and a worn blower bearing causes a buzzing or rattling noise. Leaves, dust, and debris pulled into the intake can also jam the blower or its wheel.
Cabin air filter
This is the most overlooked part and, in India, often the real culprit behind weak airflow and bad smells. The cabin filter sits between the outside air and your vents. In our dusty cities it clogs far faster than the manufacturer's optimistic interval suggests. A choked filter strangles airflow, makes the blower work harder, and becomes a breeding ground for the mould and bacteria that cause that musty switch-on smell. The evaporator, condenser, and drain
The evaporator inside the dash gets cold and naturally collects condensation, which is supposed to drain out under the car. If the drain blocks, water backs up into the footwell and the damp evaporator smells. The condenser at the front of the car sheds heat, and in stop-go Indian traffic it is constantly bombarded with dust, mud, and insects. A dirty or bent condenser cannot reject heat properly, so cooling suffers most exactly when you need it most: stationary, in traffic, in peak heat.
Software and thermal management
This is the EV-specific one. The climate system is governed by software that balances your comfort against battery safety. A car that deliberately reduces cabin cooling to protect a hot battery is not broken. Equally, genuine software bugs and outdated control firmware can cause odd behaviour, such as uneven vent temperatures, and are sometimes fixed by a manufacturer update rather than any physical repair.
How EV AC is properly diagnosed
A good diagnosis separates the cheap fixes from the expensive ones before any money is spent. Here is what a thorough professional process looks like.
- Listen to the owner and reproduce the fault. When does it happen: only in heat, only at the rear, only after parking, with a noise or a smell? The pattern points the technician at the likely cause.
- Read the car with a scan tool. Modern EVs log climate and thermal-management fault codes. A scan tool reveals whether the compressor is being commanded on, whether the system is in a battery-protection mode, and whether any sensor or actuator has failed. This step is what makes EV diagnosis different from old AC work.
- Measure vent temperatures. The technician checks the actual temperature at the centre and side vents, and compares front to rear, to quantify how weak the cooling really is rather than relying on feel.
- Inspect the cabin filter and airflow path. Pulling the filter out takes minutes and instantly explains a large share of weak-airflow and smell complaints.
- Check the condenser and drains. A visual inspection for dust, mud, bent fins, and a blocked condensate drain catches common, low-cost faults.
- Pressure-test and leak-check the refrigerant circuit. Using proper gauges and the manufacturer's evacuate-and-recharge procedure, the technician measures system pressures and, if a leak is suspected, traces it with electronic detectors or UV dye. Because EV systems demand exact refrigerant and POE oil charges, this must be done with EV-aware equipment, not a generic top-up machine.
- Confirm the oil and refrigerant type. Before recharging, a competent technician verifies the correct refrigerant and non-conductive oil for that specific EV, because using the wrong oil can destroy the compressor.

Safe DIY checks versus when to call a professional
There is a clear line in EV AC work. Anything that does not touch the high-voltage refrigerant circuit is fair game for a careful owner. Anything that does is a job for a trained technician with the right tools. Treat the orange high-voltage cabling and the sealed AC system as off-limits.
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Inspect and replace the cabin air filter. On many EVs it sits behind the glovebox and pops out in a couple of minutes with no tools. A fresh filter often restores airflow and kills the musty smell. This is the highest-value DIY check in India.
- Clear the condenser area. Look through the front grille for caked mud, leaves, and insects on the condenser and gently clear loose debris. Do not bend the fins or use high-pressure water up close.
- Check the cabin drain. If you find water in the footwell, locate the drain tube under the car and clear any blockage so condensation can escape.
- Run the AC correctly. Set recirculation on for fast cooling, crack the windows for a few seconds to dump trapped heat before you start, and use scheduled pre-cooling from the app while the car is still plugged in so you cool the cabin on grid power instead of the battery.
- Try the heat-soak reset. If cooling fades only in extreme heat, briefly changing drive mode and back has helped some Tata and MG owners reset the AC. It is harmless to try.
When to stop and call a professional
- The cooling is genuinely weak after the filter and condenser are clean, which usually means a refrigerant or compressor issue.
- You hear a new whine, hiss, or rattle from the AC.
- The dashboard shows a climate or high-voltage warning.
- You suspect a refrigerant leak, smell something sharp and chemical, or see oily residue near AC lines.
Do not attempt to open, flush, evacuate, or re-gas an EV AC system yourself. The compressor sits on a high-voltage circuit, the system must never be flushed with ordinary chemicals, and it requires an exact charge of the correct refrigerant and non-conductive POE oil. Getting any of this wrong can cause a dangerous high-voltage fault and turn a small bill into the price of a new compressor. Leave the sealed circuit to a qualified EV technician.
Repair versus replace, with indicative INR costs
The right call depends on which part has failed and whether the car is in warranty. These are indicative ranges for India in 2026. Actual prices vary by city, brand, and model, and an authorised service centre will usually cost more than an independent EV specialist. Always get a written estimate after diagnosis.
- Cabin air filter replacement: around Rs 400 to Rs 1,500 including a quality filter. Almost always a replace, not a repair, and the cheapest way to fix weak airflow and smells. In dusty cities, budget to do this more than once a year.
- AC system deep clean and anti-bacterial treatment: roughly Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000. Fixes most smell complaints and improves airflow. Worth doing before assuming an expensive fault.
- Refrigerant leak diagnosis and re-gas: about Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000 for leak detection plus a correct evacuate-and-recharge, more if a faulty joint or seal must be replaced. Note that a re-gas only lasts if the leak is found and fixed. A cheap top-up that ignores the leak is money wasted.
- Blower motor or blower regulator: roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 12,000 depending on the part and labour. Usually a replace.
- Condenser replacement (after stone or road damage): approximately Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000 including labour, since it sits exposed at the front of the car.
- Electric AC compressor replacement: this is the big one. The EV compressor part alone often runs from around Rs 15,000 to over Rs 60,000 depending on the model, with labour and the precise refrigerant-and-oil recharge on top. High-end EVs sit at the upper end and beyond.
A useful rule of thumb: filters, cleans, drains, and re-gas-with-leak-fix are repairs worth doing. A failed electric compressor is the one item where replacement is unavoidable and expensive, which is exactly why warranty and careful diagnosis matter so much. Never let a workshop jump to replacing the compressor before pressures have been measured and the cheaper causes ruled out.
Warranty: what is covered and how to claim
Most EVs sold in India carry a comprehensive vehicle warranty, commonly in the region of 3 years or 1,00,000 km, with a separate, longer warranty on the high-voltage battery, often 8 years. The AC system usually falls under the standard comprehensive warranty, not the longer battery warranty, so check your dates and kilometres carefully.
What is typically covered: manufacturing defects and premature failure of the compressor, condenser, evaporator, blower, and control electronics within the warranty period. What is typically not covered: the cabin air filter and routine cleaning, which are wear-and-service items, plus any damage from impact, water ingress, accidents, or unauthorised repair.
To protect a claim, do this:
- Service at authorised centres while in warranty. Out-of-network repairs on the sealed AC circuit can void coverage, and using the wrong oil during such a repair is exactly the kind of thing that gets a later claim rejected.
- Keep every record. Service invoices, the diagnosis report, and your service-book stamps are what an authorised centre checks before approving a warranty repair.
- Report faults early and in writing. If cooling is weak, raise it during the warranty period and get it logged. Do not wait until just after expiry.
