Instead of wearing flat and even, the tyre develops a step, a feathered edge, scalloped dips, or a flattened strip down the centre. Why it happens: the EV-specific reasons
These problems are not bad luck or poor build quality. They follow directly from how an electric scooter is built and how it is ridden.
Extra weight from the battery
The battery pack is heavy, and it sits low in the floor or under the seat. A typical premium electric scooter weighs noticeably more than a comparable petrol one, often 15 to 30 kg more. Start with the correct size
The size is printed on the tyre sidewall and in your owner's manual, and it is non-negotiable. As real-world reference points from popular Indian models:

Read those numbers off your own scooter before you buy. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width), and the last is the rim diameter in inches. Fitting a wider or taller tyre than specified can foul the bodywork, throw off the speedometer, and upset handling.
Respect the load index and speed rating
Because EVs are heavier, the load index matters. The tyre carries a load-index number and a speed-rating letter after the size. Do not drop below what came fitted. EV-rated versus normal tyres
You do not strictly need a tyre with EV stamped on it, but you do want a tyre suited to the load and the way EVs are ridden. Some brands now market EV-specific two-wheeler ranges, for example CEAT EnergyRide, and several TVS Eurogrip, MRF, Apollo and Michelin patterns are recommended for electric scooters because they balance load capacity, life and grip well. A good quality conventional scooter tyre in the correct size and load rating is perfectly acceptable; a bargain-bin no-name tyre is a false economy that wears quickly and grips poorly in the wet.
Rolling resistance versus grip versus life
This is the real trade-off, and there is no single right answer.
- If maximum range matters most to you, lean toward a low-rolling-resistance, efficiency-focused tyre, accepting that grip and ultimate life may be a touch lower.
- If you ride hard, two-up, or you commute through heavy monsoon, prioritise a grippier wet-weather compound and tougher construction, accepting a small range penalty.
- If you want the longest life and lowest running cost, choose a harder, long-wear touring compound, accepting slightly less outright grip.
Most owners are best served by a balanced, reputable city tyre that does all three reasonably rather than chasing one extreme.
Noise
If road hum bothers you in your quiet EV, ask the fitter for a tyre known to be quiet, and make sure both tyres are the same make and pattern. Mixing brands front and rear, or fitting a coarse off-road-style block tread, makes noise worse.
Tubeless, always
Stick with tubeless. Every mainstream EV scooter ships tubeless for good reason: a tubeless tyre deflates slowly after a puncture instead of letting go suddenly, it can be plugged from the outside in minutes, and it runs slightly cooler. You can double the useful life of a set of tyres with habits that cost almost nothing.
Get the air pressure right, every week
Correct pressure is the highest-value, lowest-effort thing you can do. Run the pressure your manufacturer recommends, which is on a sticker on the scooter or in the manual, not a number you guessed.

- Check pressure cold, before you ride, at least once a week. Tyres warm up and read higher after a few kilometres.
- Buy a small pencil or digital gauge for about 150 to 400 rupees rather than trusting roadside machines, which are often wildly out of calibration.
- Increase rear pressure when carrying a pillion or load.
- Inspect for nails, cuts, cracks and bulges at the same time.
- Do not over-inflate to chase range; it wears the centre, reduces grip and gives a harsh ride.
Soft tyres are the classic hidden cause of poor range and shoulder wear. Five psi low is enough to noticeably hurt both.
Rotation
On a single-tyre-size scooter where front and rear match, you can have the fitter swap front and rear at service to even out wear, since the rear wears faster. On scooters with different front and rear sizes, such as the Gen 3 Ather, rotation is not possible and you simply replace the worn tyre, usually the rear, more often.
Alignment and a straight wheel
Two-wheelers do not have four-wheel toe-and-camber alignment, but they do need the front and rear wheels to be in line and true. After a hard pothole hit or a kerb strike, an alloy can buckle slightly or the wheels can fall out of line, which shows up as a pull to one side, odd wear, or a wobble. A good workshop will check wheel run-out and frame and fork alignment, and either correct or flag a damaged alloy.
Balancing
A wheel that is even slightly out of balance causes vibration through the bars and floorboard at certain speeds and chews the tyre unevenly. Every time you fit a new tyre, have the wheel balanced with small weights. It is cheap, quick, and it is the cure for most mystery vibrations. Strong regen on the rear wheel adds another source of repeated load that can contribute to rear wear, and an oddly grabby or pulsing regen feel can sometimes be confused with a tyre or wheel issue. Realistic life expectancy
Treat these as broad, real-world ranges, because your riding style, pressure discipline, load and roads change everything.
- A rear tyre on a torquey premium EV scooter, ridden in the city with enthusiastic acceleration, often needs replacing somewhere between roughly 12,000 and 22,000 km.
- A front tyre, which is not driven, frequently lasts considerably longer, often 25,000 to 35,000 km or more, and is commonly replaced on age or damage rather than wear.
- Gentle riders with correct pressure and lighter scooters routinely beat the upper end of these ranges; hard riders in Sport mode fall below them.
Replace a tyre when any of these is true, regardless of distance:
- Tread is down to the wear indicators, the small raised bars set into the grooves. Once the tread is level with them, the tyre is finished, especially for the monsoon.
- You see cracks, a bulge, a cut deep enough to show the fabric, or a sidewall injury.
- The tyre has already had two or three plug repairs, or any repair near the sidewall.
- The rubber is old and hard, typically beyond about five years, even if tread remains, because compounds harden and lose grip with age.
- Wear is badly uneven and balancing or alignment has not solved the underlying cause.
Never wait for the monsoon to expose a bald tyre. Replace before the rains, not during them.

- A good-quality 12-inch tubeless EV-suitable scooter tyre such as a CEAT, TVS Eurogrip, MRF or Apollo pattern typically runs from roughly 1,000 to 1,800 rupees per tyre. That is more than many owners expected, and it is the everyday reality behind the headline that EV tyres cost more to run. They are slightly pricier and they wear faster, so over the life of the scooter tyres are a line item worth planning for, not a surprise.
Handling a puncture the smart way
Because EV scooters are tubeless, a puncture is rarely a roadside disaster if you act sensibly.
- A slow leak gives you time. Ride gently to a nearby tyre shop; do not blast along at speed on a deflating tyre, because that overheats and destroys the tyre and can damage the alloy beyond repair.
- A roadside string or worm plug, from a kit costing about 150 to 300 rupees, will get you home and is good for a few thousand kilometres. Treat it as temporary.
- For a lasting fix, have the tyre dismounted and a mushroom or combination patch fitted from the inside; that lasts the rest of the tyre's life.
- Industry practice is a maximum of about three repairs per tyre, all in the central tread. Any puncture in or near the sidewall, or a fourth puncture, means the tyre should be replaced.
